The "Duh" of Interpersonal Effectiveness

If you don't want someone to take things so personally, it helps to not offer your thoughts or feedback in a highly personal tone.

It's one thing for the sender of a message to say to its recipient: "You shouldn't take it personally." It's quite another for the speaker to thoughtfully reframe remarks so they don't have personal animosity attached to them.
